[lastfm]Billy Corgan[/lastfm] and the rest of the Smashing Pumpkins have announced that their newest member is veteran bassist Nicole Fiorentino. The band broke the news in a statement on their official website, noting that Fiorentino will join the group for their upcoming world tour behind their 44-song uber-EP, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope.
Fiorentino is best known for her previous stints with rockers [lastfm]Veruca Salt[/lastfm], [lastfm]Spinerette[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Twilight Sleep[/lastfm]. She also made a recent appearance with Light FM at a fundraiser for the president of the Smashing Pumpkins fan club.
Fiorentino is a Los Angeles-based musician originally hailing from Brookline, Massachusetts. The 31-year-old bassist replaces Ginger Pooley, who announced her departure from the band in March, citing family responsibilities for her resignation. “With sorrow and yet with much thankfulness for the opportunity to have played in the Pumpkins, I am sad to say that I can no longer tour with the Pumpkins,” Pooley said in a statement on the Smashing Pumpkins’ website.
“Although I’ve been blessed beyond belief over the past few years through playing with the Pumpkins, my priority now is to keep our little family unit together, which includes my husband and my baby,” she added.
