Though some news sources claim that Watts has “quit worldwide touring,” a new report from NME suggests that the life-long Stones drummer will stay behind the kit.

“Contrary to a fabricated and ill informed report that appeared yesterday on a small music website in Australia, we would like to make it clear that drummer Charlie Watts has not left The Rolling Stones,” a spokesperson told the U.K. magazine.

“Charlie is currently being interviewed by the media promoting their latest project – the release of the album Exile on Main Street and the forthcoming film Stones In Exile, released on DVD next month,” the spokesperson added.

The controversy first arose when the website for Australia’s Herald Sun reported that the band was in talks with American drummer [lastfm]Steve Jordan [/lastfm]as Watts’ possible replacement.

The Stones are also making headlines this week for earning their first U.K. number one album in 16 years with their newly re-released classic, Exile on Main St.
