As part of his headlining performance at this year’s Isle of Wight Festival, [lastfm]Paul McCartney [/lastfm]paid tribute to legendary guitarist [lastfm]Jimi Hendrix[/lastfm], who gave a historic performance at the U.K. fest in 1970.

Toward the end of his 1974 hit, “Let Me Roll It,” McCartney played the iconic riff from Hendrix’s classic “Purple Haze.”

“I was really lucky to know Jimi and hang out with him a little bit in the ’60s, he was a great guy,” McCartney told the audience. “The biggest tribute we had from him was we [[lastfm]The Beatles[/lastfm]] released ‘Sgt. Pepper’ on a Friday and then I went to see him on the Sunday and he learnt it, how cool was that for me? Very cool!”

In addition to tracks from his [lastfm]Wings[/lastfm] era, Sir Paul also offered up a selection of Beatles tunes, including “Back In The USSR,” “Let It Be” and “Hey Jude.”
