Weezer Cuts Unofficial U.S. Soccer Team Anthem
[lastfm]Rivers Cuomo [/lastfm]and his fellow [lastfm]Weezer[/lastfm] bandmates have offered up the “unofficial” theme song for the U.S. Soccer Team at the World Cup. In their support of the team’s international run, the band has released a new tune, “Represent,” through YouTube.
On the track, the insatiable soccer fans make their feelings known, singing, “It matters whether you win or lose.”
Cuomo has been a soccer fan since he was a kid, so he was a little nervous when the band confirmed a headlining slot at the Bonnaroo Music Festival on the same day as the U.S. Team’s opening match against England.
“They are actually playing the game on a big screen at the festival,” he told MLSsoccer.com. “So if you can believe it, I’ll be sitting in front of that big screen with all the other concert-goers, watching the game. As soon as we realized we were going to confirm that show, we asked the promoter if they were going to be showing the game. They’re actually making a big deal out of it.”
The frontman also wrote a song for the U.S. team during the 2006 World Cup, a tune he originally called “Our Time Will Come” but was re-titled “My Day Is Coming.”
