[lastfm]Prince[/lastfm] will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 10th annual BET Awards show on June 27 in Los Angeles. Previous recipients of this award include [lastfm]James Brown[/lastfm], [lastfm]Diana Ross[/lastfm], the [lastfm]O’Jays[/lastfm], [lastfm]Whitney Houston[/lastfm],[lastfm] Al Green[/lastfm], and [lastfm]Earth, Wind & Fire[/lastfm].
“We are humbled that Prince will be our lifetime achievement award recipient,” Stephen G. Hill, BET’s President of Programming, Music and Specials said in a statement. “Genre smasher, virtuoso musician, one of the most emotional singers of all time; words are too weak to describe just what he means to our culture. We have a different kind of tribute planned for him as his unique style deserves a unique honor. Prince is dynamic. Prince is genius. Prince is music.”
In a recent interview with Ebony magazine, the 52-year-old, 10-time platinum performer says the he stayed relevant by always looking ahead in his music.
“We made music way ahead of its time anyway . . . It’s as fresh 2day as ever,” he said.
This year’s BET Awards ceremony will be hosted by [lastfm]Queen Latifah[/lastfm].
