[lastfm]Peter Gabriel [/lastfm]has offered up a cover version of [lastfm]Tom Waits’ [/lastfm]1983 track “In the Neighborhood” to help raise awareness for a charity group called the Voice Project. The organization helps bring relief to those affected by the ongoing conflicts in Northern Uganda, Southern Sudan and Eastern Congo.
“I’ve wanted to sing Tom Waits’ ‘In the Neighborhood’ for a long time and this was a great opportunity,” Gabriel said in a statement. “I love the idea that a song can reach people that can’t be touched in any other way.”
He added, “We can start dealing with the world’s problems linking person to person. That is what is powerful about the Voice Project’s original dream.”
According to Waits’ website, Gabriel’s use of song to spread the word is a fitting approach. Waits’ website explains that “the women there have been using songs to send messages of forgiveness to those abducted and forced to fight, many of hide in the bush, afraid to return home.”
