Da[lastfm]ve Matthews Band[/lastfm] is speaking out against mining practices that are currently causing destruction in the Appalachian Mountains. Last month, the band offered up a benefit show called Music Saves Mountains to help put an end to the mining.
“With mountaintop removal, it’s gone to this whole different level, this aggressive, ambitious destruction of the landscape. It just needs to be stopped. It’s unforgivable behavior,” [lastfm]Dave Matthews[/lastfm] told the Natural Resources Defense Council before the show.
Other featured artists who played at the event included [lastfm]Emmylou Harris[/lastfm], [lastfm]Sheryl Crow[/lastfm] and [lastfm]Tift Merritt[/lastfm], along with several other environment advocates.
According to Spinner, Matthews visits West Virginia once a year and has firsthand knowledge of where the mining is occurring. He believes that because people are brushing off the issue and refusing to take action, the coal companies are being allowed to continue profiting from the destruction.
“Music has a way of turning people’s heads,” he said. “All I have to do is come and sing a song to make more people turn in this direction, because that’s what we have to do is just raise awareness.”
