[lastfm]R.E.M.[/lastfm] have confirmed that they are currently at work on their next album in a Berlin studio. According to the legendary group, they are hoping to release the new offering by spring 2011.
In a post to the band’s official website, manager Bertis Downs explains that Berlin is the ideal place to record the album.
“Berlin is a pulsing, exciting city with so many varied and distinctive neighborhoods, iconic history all around, great food at all levels and from every corner of the world . . . an excellent place to set up camp and make a great record,” Downs writes.
“I will not report on the sound or the dimension of the recordings so far, to my ears it all sounds like quite a wonderful set of songs.”
It’s been a busy month for R.E.M., who re-released their 1985 classic Fables of the Reconstruction on July 13. To celebrate the re-issue, the band also offered up a free stream of their previously unreleased track “Throw Those Trolls Away.”
The stream is currently available through R.E.M.’s official website.
