[lastfm]Wyclef Jean[/lastfm] has confirmed that he will run for the presidency in his home country of Haiti. The Brooklyn-raised hip-hop star made the announcement to Time magazine earlier this week and is expected to officially announce his candidacy on CNN’s Larry King Live on Thursday.
“If not for the earthquake, I probably would have waited another 10 years before doing this,” he said. “The quake drove home to me that Haiti can’t wait another 10 years for us to bring it into the 21st century,” Jean said.
Jean has been an outspoken advocate for Haitian issues throughout his career and has become a visible leader in the relief effort since the earthquake.
“If I can’t take five years out to serve my country as president, then everything I’ve been singing about, like equal rights, doesn’t mean anything,” he said.
Haiti’s election will take place on November 28.
