Wyclef Says He’ll Fight Election Decision
[lastfm]Wyclef Jean[/lastfm] says he plans to fight the Haitian electoral council’s decision to bar him from running for president in the country’s upcoming election. Jean was initially barred from the election because he has not lived in Haiti for five consecutive years, but in a new statement, the hip-hop star claims he has met the criteria.
Wyclef spoke out against the ruling via Twitter on Sunday, arguing that he both owns a home in the country and that he has also served as a global ambassador to the nation in recent years.
“Tomorrow our lawyers are appealing the decision of the CEP. We have met all the requirements set by the laws. And the law must be respected,” he tweeted.
Though Jean was raised in Brooklyn, New York, he says that the official ruling was not cleared by all sections of the electoral council and that he will fight the decision through Haiti’s legal system.
He added, “I will be seeking a solution through legal channels, and I urge my countrymen to be patient.”
