We’re not much for musicals over here, but the American Idiot musical seems like it would be pretty cool, espciially with Billy Joe as part of the cast.
[lastfm]Green Day [/lastfm]frontman [lastfm]Billie Joe Armstrong[/lastfm] recently spent a week performing with the cast of his Broadway musical American Idiot, the play based on the band’s 2004 album of the same name. In the show, Armstrong played St. Jimmy, the dark alter ego of lead character Johnny.
Armstrong agreed to appear in the show after actor Tony Vincent had to leave for a family emergency. According to a new report from Playbill, Armstrong’s involvement in the show caused a huge boost in ticket sales.
The punk icon appeared on Broadway between September 28 and October 3 and Playbill reports that ticket sales increased from $480,566 the week before to $1,092,334. The staggering leap is sure to help the show’s weekly sale average, which is $740,000 thus far.
Understudies will take over for Armstrong, who heads off to South America for a pair of dates with Green Day later this month. They will appear at HSBC Arena in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil on October 15 and the Anhembi Convention Center in Sao Paulo on October 20.
