Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Premiere – Today’s Track “Look Around”
Celebrate Hump Day with Wednesday’s awesome new track from the[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Red Hot Chili Peppers[/lastfm]’ upcoming album I’m With You.
Today, we’ve got a funky new jam band joint with staccato lyrics and punctuated hand claps called “Look Around.”
Looking around is something the ever-philosophical [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Flea Balzary [/lastfm]has no trouble doing and in an exclusive video interview with KROQ’s Stryker, Flea talks about the meaning of being an artist and how he feels about [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Josh Klinghoffer[/lastfm] being in the band.
Flea gets a little emotional about his familial love for Josh, but as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Anthony Kiedis[/lastfm] sings in “Look Around,” “it’s emotional/And I told you so/But you had to know/So I told you.”
Josh Talks About Joining The Band After John & Flea Talks About The Meaning of Music
While many devoted Red Hot Chili Peppers very verbally mourn the departure of long-time Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante, Josh Klinghoffer has not only contributed a different energy artistically to the band, but has also given the Peppers a rebirth.
The band, who has known Klinghoffer since he was seventeen-years-old, saw immediately that he was a “serious artist” and a “kindred spirit.”
[pullquote quote=”If you’re not willing to be moving and flexible and changing, it’s not exciting to me. I knew that Josh could do all those things.”]KROQ on-air personality Stryker posed the question of why the Red Hot Chili Peppers didn’t have someone audition as a guitarist for the band.
Flea explains that his initial intention wasn’t to replace John, but that the addition of Josh “fit the bill.”
“When John left the band, before he left, I didn’t think it would be possible or that I would have any desire to want to continue the band without him because John’s irreplaceable and he was great. He gave so much. He wrote so much for us. He wrote so much great stuff.”
“But after he left…all of a sudden it was like, ‘Wait, I really love this band,’ you know, and I want to continue it.”
“When that decision was made, it was clear that whoever we were going to get, we couldn’t get somebody that would be John because there’s only one John. We needed someone that had their own being, their own entity as an artist.”
“They were their own man, with their own way, and their own approach to music. That approach had to be a beautiful one, a pure one, a powerful one. And Josh fit the bill.”
[pullquote quote=”You are it. You hope to be a conduit for magic. And that’s what’s happening when we’re with Josh.”]Not only did Josh fit the bill, but his core being vibrated on the same frequency as the band’s. Flea continues to explain, emphasizing the spiritual aspect of artistry:
“It’s the thing that more than anything, the most important thing to me, was someone we knew that would give their heart to what we’re doing and completely give themselves emotionally and spiritually and every which way to the creative process that this band is.”
“I have no interest in a band being a thing that’s like a thing. If it’s a thing, I’m bored. It has to be a process. It’s like consciousness. It’s not like a thing that sits in one position. It has to be moving and growing. “
“It has to be always growing and always in flux. It doesn’t matter how good of a player you are or how cool your aesthetic is, if you’re not willing to be moving and flexible and changing, it’s not exciting to me.”
“I knew that Josh could do all those things. I knew that he could give his heart to us. And he was family. He knows who we are.”
[pullquote quote=”Art envelops you like a mother enveloping you into her breast. It’s a beautiful thing. It’s not an intimidating thing. It’s a beautiful thing.”]”I have known them now over ten years and I consider myself friends with all of them…It felt good and I think everyone felt free. I felt at home from the second we began playing with each other.”
“We’re artists. We’re musicians. We love to play music. We live to be inside of the moment of letting this powerful, divine thing flow through us.”
“And when you’re doing that, it’s beyond fear or ego or any of those things. When you’re in that moment and you’re doing that, you just live it. You are it. You hope to be a conduit for magic. And that’s what’s happening when we’re with Josh.”
“Art envelops you like a mother enveloping you into her breast. It’s a beautiful thing. It’s not an intimidating thing. It’s a beautiful thing.”
