Austin City Limits Festival: Delta Spirit, Kanye West, Foster The People, And A Rainstorm Among Day 1 Highlights
The first day of Austin City Limits definitely proved to be a great day for music. The day started off with a heavy rain that the crowd cheered for as loud as any of the acts, because it was the first rain that the city had seen in months.
[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Theopolis London[/lastfm] actually stopped his set on the Bud Light Main Stage to play a different song because, as he said, it was “a f***ing perfect song for the rain.”
Other than the heavy rain early in the day the weather was perfect. There was a slight breeze and clouds protected everyone from the heat.
For people who haven’t been to ACL, the grounds are much different from how Lollapalooza is set up. The 46 acre Zilker Park has a wide open feel and is definitely easier to get between stages. ACL, similar to Lollapalooza, has an area dedicated to food called “Austin Eats” where you can sample the food from a lot of the local restaurants. I sampled one of the more popular restaurants called The Mighty Cone which served up a delicious hot and crunchy chicken dish on coleslaw wrapped in a flour tortilla.
The lineup on day 1 had something for everyone from choirs to county to rock and rap. I checked out [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Delta Spirit[/lastfm] who probably had the most energy of all of the bands I saw yesterday. They were the only rock band to perform on the Bud Light Main Stage yesterday.
[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Foster The People[/lastfm] drew one of the biggest crowds for day 1. If you showed up once the band went on stage there was no way for you to get anywhere near the stage because people were packed in so tight to see them. The band definitely played up to their jingle oriented music fans by playing all of the hits off of their new album.
[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Ray LaMontagne[/lastfm] sounded great and just like one of his recordings and must have been hot on stage wearing purple suit pants and a long sleeved shirt with a vest over it.
[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Coldplay[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kanye West[/lastfm] closed out day 1 of ACL. Having seen Coldplay a month before at Lollapalooza I decided to check out Kanye. His entrance was the most impressive of the weekend so far. He rose out of the middle of the crowd on a lift for his first song. Once the song was over the walked back up on stage and continued to put on a great set that was full of great imagery, lights, lasers and dancers.
As the evening came to a close people started filing out of the grounds and everyone seemed to be talking about acts they had just seen or what they were looking forward to tomorrow. I’m looking forward to getting back down there and checking out today’s lineup. Although [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]My Morning Jacket[/lastfm] is performing I think I might have to close the night down with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Stevie Wonder[/lastfm] instead.
