Best Sellers From The ’90s: Bush And “Sixteen Stone”
Though not critically acclaimed, [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Gavin Rossdale[/lastfm]’s songs about the big three (sex, death and religion) rang a bell with record buyers, pushing sales of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Bush[/lastfm]’s Sixteen Stone into the millions.
Though it was produced by UK hitmen Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley (who previous collaborations with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Madness[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Elvis Costello[/lastfm] were decidedly “British-sounding”), Bush co-opted the American Modern Rock sound for their debut record, Sixteen Stone.
It was the MTV love of “Everything Zen” that turned US music fans onto the band in early ’95. It helped the album go gold and spawned three more modern rock hits: “Little Things,” “Comedown” and “Glycerine.”
[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nirvana[/lastfm]-inspired and homogenized for rock radio, Sixteen Stone has sold 6 million copies since its release in December 1994.
