Twenty-five years ago this week, rock journeyman [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Billy Vera[/lastfm] finally hit it big, thanks to a TV show that featured one of his old songs.

Billy Vera joined his first band in 1962. He scored a couple of hits in the late ’60s, but focused mainly on songwriting in the ’70s, and later began an acting career.

Vera formed a band called the Beaters, and in the early ’80s, it became a big deal in southern California. The group even bagged a top-40 hit called “I Can Take Care of Myself” in 1981, but a follow-up single made it only to #79 in Billboard, and it was back to the clubs for [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Billy Vera and the Beaters[/lastfm].

In 1985, the producers of the TV show Family Ties needed a love theme for the characters played by Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan, and they chose that relatively minor 1981 hit, “At This Moment.” Fans of the show began asking for the song, and the album By Request: the Best of Billy Vera and the Beaters, was rushed into stores. “At This Moment,” which had been recorded live in 1981, hit the #1 spot on the Hot 100 25 years ago this week.
