The pop songstress debuted “Part of Me” at the Grammys and the line, “You can keep the diamond ring/It didn’t mean nothing anyway” was much speculated to be a swipe husband Russell Brand, who had recently filed for divorce from the pop star. But Katy Perry sat down with Access Hollywood to say: not really.

“I wrote ‘Part of Me’ two years ago and I always knew that ‘Part of Me’ was a special song,” Perry said. “It feels like my life plays out with these songs. I feel like I’m in some kind of weird Truman Show where I’m like, ‘Why is this single appropriate now and it wouldn’t have been appropriate then?’ It’s just so crazy.”

With that timeline in mind, “Part of Me” could easily be about her relationship with Gym Class Heroes front-man Travie McCoy. Except for one little thing: Perry changed the song lyrics for her Grammy performance. The original lyrics read, “You can keep the dog from me/It didn’t mean nothing anyway.”

Whether the lyric change was a reaction to her own personal life or simply better enhanced the break-up track is impossible to say, but it does lean itself to speculation. Perry remarks, ”I think it’s really important for me to write songs that are still honest and relatable because that’s what everyone else is going through.” The question remains: should we relate to our own break-ups or to Perry’s?

Either way, brace yourself for something different with Perry’s next album. In her Interview magazine cover story with Kristen Wiig she references her admiration for Fiona Apple’s Tidal, Alanis Morrisette’s Jagged Little Pill, and Patti Loveless’s Red — a trio of angry break-up albums, before telling Wiig, “Yeah, well, my music is about to get real f****** dark, so…”
