Actor Gary Sinise is best known for his role as “Mac Taylor” on the hit crime series CSI:NY, but he is also in a band called The Lt. Dan Band. The band was named after his role as an injured soldier in the film Forrest Gump. His character was an American soldier who was forced to have both legs amputated. After embodying such a powerful and close to reality individual, Sinise felt an even closer bond with the American military troops and wanted to give back to those wounded in battle. His current support for the troops lies in a project that will help three billion disabled veteran soldiers.

Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band will perform a benefit concert tonight at the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College to raise money to build a house for Brooklyn native Bryan Dilberian, who lost three limbs fighting in Afghanistan last year. The concert proceeds go to the Gary Sinise Foundation and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which help build customized homes for injured army heroes.
The star called in to WCBS-FM/New York to chat with Dan Taylor about the event. Dan expressed how happy he was to hear his voice. The two were supposed to speak a week ago, but Sinise was involved in a car accident, which he says he doesn’t even remember.
“I still have some issues that I’m working on. It was actually pretty scary — I don’t really remember it. I’m told what happened by other people. I knocked out and woke up in the emergency room. I have some issues with my neck but we’re dealing with and I’m going to pick up the bass and get on stage this weekend.”

Despite his unfortunate accident, Gary is ready to pick up his bass and rock out for a good cause with his cover band. He says it’s going to be a fun show filled with great songs, by great artists. He’s excited to raise as much money as he can for Bryan Dilberian.
“Most of us don’t do this kind of work. Most of us enjoy the comfort of our lives and just go on and try to enjoy life, and we get to do it in a free society because there are people our their who are willing to go out and do dangerous work. If something happens to them and they get hurt, it’s nice to know that there is something I can do to give back to these folks. We can never take for granted that sacrifice.”
