Backbeat, the 1994 film that chronicles the Beatles’ early days, has already seen its theater adaptation come to life in Glasgow, London (in the West End, no less), and soon, Toronto. It seems, however, that Backbeat’s anticipated Broadway run will follow a brief run in Los Angeles, as reported today by Billboard.

The musical will makes its stateside debut at Los Angeles’ Ahmanson Theater this January, with previews beginning January 16th and its official open on January 23rd. A month later, on February 24th, the show will finish its L.A. run and head to New York for a run on Broadway. The Broadway opening date for Backbeat is not yet known, but it is suspected to open by the end of April in order to be eligible for the 2013 Tony Awards.

For those not familiar with the 1994 filmor the Beatles’ formative years as a band, Backbeat focuses much of its attention on Stu Sutcliffe, the band’s original bassist, and his dynamic with John Lennon. Sutcliffe left the band in 1961 to focus on his painting career just months after meeting and falling in love with German photographer Astrid Kirchherr during one of the Beatles’ early residencies in Hamburg. Sutcliffe died of an aneurysm less than a year after leaving the Beatles and moving to Hamburg.

It was during those Hamburg shows that the Beatles cut their cut on covers like “Long Tall Sally,” “Twist and Shout,” “Good Golly Miss Molly,” “Please Mr. Postman” and “Rock ‘n’ Roll Music,” which appear in the theater production of Backbeat. Original Beatles songs, however, do not.
