This weekend, Neil Young is holding his annual Bridge School Benefit concert at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, Calif. The all-acoustic concert will feature Young playing with his usually-electric band Crazy Horse, as well as Guns N’ Roses, another band more well known for loud, electric music. Also on the bill is actor Steve Martin with his bluegrass band, The Steep Canyon Rangers, as well as Jack White, The Flaming Lips, Sarah McLachlan, Foster The People, Lucinda Williams, k.d. lang, Gary Clark Jr. and Ray LaMontagne.

The same lineup performs on Saturday and Sunday. You can watch Saturday’s show (but apparently, not Sunday’s) by contributing $5 to the Bridge School online. For more information go here.

The Bridge School assists children with severe physical impairments and complex communication needs. One of the thrusts of the program is the use of advanced augmentative and alternative communication and assistive technology. Pegi Young, Neil’s wife, is the co-founder of The Bridge School, and recently spoke to CBS Local about the school and its mission.

Neil and Pegi started the shows in 1986 with a lineup that featured Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Tom Petty, Nils Lofgren and Robin Williams.  In the years since, the lineups have featured Bob Dylan, Metallica, Sonic Youth, Billy Idol, Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Phish, Paul McCartney, The Who and Brian Wilson playing acoustic sets. Pegi says that it’s too difficult to choose a favorite musical performance.  A lot of her favorite moments took place backstage, where the artists interact with the children who are benefiting from the concert.
