In 2004, DJ Danger Mouse took two artists that helped to define generations – different generations, mind you – and smashed them together. The result was The Grey Album, a mash-up of The Beatles’ White Album and Jay-Z’s Black Album, which helped bridge the gap between these two influential artists and pave the way for mash-up culture.

As Forbes points out, both Jay-Z and Paul McCartney claimed to be fans of Danger Mouse’s original, which was self-released and in fact, illegal. (EMI, the label that Danger Mouse would later be signed to, sent him a cease-and desist letter but took no further legal action.)

Now the album has been remastered by an outside audio engineer, John Stewart, a professional and fan of the work whose goal was to improve the audio quality. And just like Danger Mouse’s original, the new version is available for free here. You can also stream the remastered Grey Album in its entirety via SoundCloud below.

For Beatles fans who may have never heard the White Album reinterpreted through Jay-Z’s rhymes, the Grey Album is a must-listen, even if just for the experience.
