Simply Red’s Mick Hucknall and rock group The Stereophonics are among the artists participating in a marathon recording session in an attempt to recreate The Beatles‘ debut album Please Please Me within 12 hours; that’s how much time it took the Fab Four to record the album five decades ago.

The challenge will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2 on Feb. 11 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the historic album’s recording session. It will also be filmed for a BBC 4 special 12 Hours To Please Me airing on Feb. 15, according to BBC News. Hucknall, along with other musicians, will record in Abbey Road Studios where the original album was made, and have just the 12-hour time frame to record all of the songs.

BBC Radio 2 DJs Stuart Maconie and Jo Whiley will host the live events, which will also feature appearances by engineer Richard Langham, who worked on the original album, and Beatles press officer Tony Barrow. The project will serve as the centerpiece of a two-week series called The Golden Age Of The Record, running across the BBC 4, Radio 2 and 6 Music networks. Programs in the celebration aim to look “behind the scenes of a really exciting moment in popular music history when some of our most iconic albums were recorded, and try to discover what are the essential ingredients that make an album great,” says BBC controller Richard Klein.

While some reports stated that Hucknall will sing the entire album, he recently tweeted “To clarify the rather clumsy Radio Times headline, I’ll be singing one song from the Beatles’ Please Please Me album.”  He didn’t specify which song, and no other singers have been announced.

Hucknall, well known for his huge pop hits with Simply Red, is well accustomed to filling in for other singers: in recent years, he’s been singing for the partially reunited Faces, and performed  with them at their induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame last year.
