Metallica Through the Never, the ambitious 3D movie starring the heavy metal icons, finally has a release date.

The concert film, which interspersed with a parallel narrative starring actor Dean Dehaan (he’ll play a bad guy in next year’s The Amazing Spider Man 2), will hit North American IMAX theaters on September 27 for an exclusive one-week engagement. Metallica Through the Never will release wider to more theaters on October 4.

“IMAX! It doesn’t get any bigger or cooler than that!” raved Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich in a press release. “For four guys in a rock band of average height, to get a chance to unleash their 3D film on IMAX screens the size of buildings across the country is a mind-blowing thought. ‘Hey look, Mom, I’m 50 feet tall (finally!)’ There is no better way to experience film and when you throw in the spectacle of music and sound this should amount to an unprecedented, unique and truly next level experience.”

The movie will feature live footage of Metallica shot over three shows in Vancouver last summer, as well as follow one of the band’s roadies (played by DeHaan) on a life-changing mission in the arena while the band performs.

With the film set for fall release, Metallica’s attention will be on their second Orion Music + More Festival, scheduled for June 8th and 9th on Detroit’s Belle Isle. Red Hot Chili PeppersDeftones and Bassnectar are among the other acts set for the two-day concert.
