Neil Young, Springsteen, Sabbath, Pearl Jam Offer Tickets For Activism

Bruce Springsteen, Kanye WestBlack Sabbath, Pearl Jam and Neil Young are among the artists participating in the Global Citizen Tickets Initiative, a push to encourage fans to become active in the war against extreme poverty.

The group behind this initiative also put on the Global Festival last year, with Young, the Foo Fighters, the Black Keys, Band Of Horses and K’Naan. That show was billed as “a free ticketed music festival to help end extreme poverty,” for which fans “earned” tickets via a point system that allowed to gain points for “learning, sharing (on social media) and taking action against global poverty.” Once someone earned three points, they were entered  into a drawing to win a pair of tickets to the festival.

As part of the new initiative, artists will donate two tickets to every show they play for the next three years, and fans can earn points and apply them to a ticket lottery. (They’ll earn one for sharing a Facebook video dealing with extreme poverty, 20 for raising $20 or more for a participating charity, etc.)

According to Rolling Stone, the way the lottery system works is: Fans who rack up between 10 and 20 points (depending on the concert price) can “spend” them on prize drawings for tickets. They’ll manage their accounts on the Global Citizen webpage. The tickets are from each headliner’s personal stash, so they’re guaranteed to be available for every show and desirable seats (areas where press and contest winners usually sit, for example).
