She probably doesn’t like movies. If she saw a movie, she’d contemplate tearing it to shreds with her claws but that would take too much effort. And the lazy, stupid humans that make movies? All dumb. Yes, we’re talking about the one and only soon-to-be movie star Grumpy Cat, a sourpuss turned rampant internet sensation and winner of the Meme of the Year for the the 2013 Webby Awards.
On blogs throughout the interwebs, on television shows, and festivals, Grumpy Cat wasn’t kitten when she decided to grab life by the tail and chase it into a bizarre pile of monetary wealth that her human slaves are probably keeping far from a litter box hiding place. Now Todd Garner and Sean Robins of Broken Road and Grumpy Cat’s managerial posse have green-lit a movie staring the cranky critter.
It makes sense considering the crabby-looking little kitty with the good looks of Phyl-hiss Diller but the sweet complacent demeanor of Marilyn Meowroe has a massive social media following including 120,000-ish Youtube subscribers, almost a million Facebook likes and millions of views. There’s even Grumpy Cat paraphernalia that sells at major retailers through the world. There is almost zero marketing for the viral video sensation who kind of markets herself. She’s like a movie house’s dream come true/a broke screenwriters wrist-slashing nightmare.
According to Deadline, Will Ferrell and Jack Black are slotted to play the two main characters in the film, with New Line distributing. Todd Gardner said in an interview that although Grumpy Cat just started off as a picture of a cat, “rare is an image that evokes that much comedy.”
“You read all of the memes and the comments, and one is funnier than the next. We think we can build a big family comedy around this character.”
