It’s confirmed: Nine Inch Nails will release a new single this Thursday (June 6) to radio at 11:30 a.m. PDT.
The new song, titled “Came Back Haunted,” “harkens back to early Nine Inch Nails,” says Lisa Worden, Music Director for Los Angeles alternative station KROQ.
“I think it’s in line with the first two albums,” Worden continues. “It’s got a great beat, it’s not the experimental material Trent’s done in the last five years.” Worden indicated the song didn’t strike her as angry. Rather the beat is what made an impression. “I wouldn’t say that it’s dance-y, but it does have a great beat, a groove. Trent [Reznor] really brought it with this song. It’s going to sound amazing to new fans and old. It’s just cool.”
The release of a new album came as a surprise last week when Reznor revealed what he’d been up to.
“I’ve been less than honest about what I’ve really been up to lately,” the band’s frontman and mastermind said on the official NIN Tumblr page. “For the last year I’ve been secretly working non-stop with Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder on a new, full-length Nine Inch Nails record, which I am happy to say is finished and frankly f****** great.
Reznor added, “This is the real impetus and motivation behind the decision to assemble a new band and tour again. My forays into film, HTDA (How to Destroy Angels) and other projects really stimulated me creatively and I decided to focus that energy on taking Nine Inch Nails to a new place. Here we go!”
It’s been half a decade since Nine Inch Nails’ released The Slip in 2008. The band’s seventh album, it peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard 200 album chart.
The latest incarnation of Nine Inch Nails features musicians Adrian Belew, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Eustis and Robin Finck, who recently replaced a departed Eric Avery (formerly of Jane’s Addiction), who left to work on other projects. The new line-up is set to make an impression on this year’s festival seasons, with appearances lined up at Lollapalooza, Outside Lands, Made in America and more.
Nine Inch Nails is the latest high-profile signing for Columbia Records, who recently made headlines by securing Daft Punk for their most recent album, Random Access Memories, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 album chart last week.
