A section of highway in Woodstock, NY has been renamed Levon Helm Memorial Boulevard. Formerly Route 375, the portion of highway connects Route 28 in West Hurley and Route 212 in Woodstock. The change was made official last night (June 19) with a bill passed by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The bill had been under review for several weeks, having been introduced by Assemblyman Kevin Cahill (D-Kingston) and sponsored by Senator John Bonacic (R-Mount Hope).

Helm made Woodstock his home for four decades. The GRAMMY Award winner returned to prominence in recent years with his Midnight Ramble house concerts, held at his home and studio dubbed “The Barn.” The shows helped raise money for Helm’s medical bills after a near career-ending bout with throat cancer in the late 1990s. Helm lost his battle with cancer in April 2012 at the age of 71.

Helm was a founding member of The Band, which frequently performed as Bob Dylan‘s backing band. A tribute concert featuring Joe Walsh, Roger Waters, Eric Church and My Morning Jacket, among others, took place last year and was recently released as a concert album and film.
