Stone Temple Pilots shocked the rock world at this year’s KROQ Weenie Roast by appearing onstage with Linkin Park singer Chester Benningtonon in lieu of their controversial frontman, Scott Weiland. Despite the inevitable fallout between Weiland and the rest of band, the singer has revealed that he has no hard feelings toward Bennington for any of it.

“I’ve known Chester for a long time. I got to be pretty close with him on the [2001] Family Values Tour,” Weiland told Billboard. “I don’t think Chester did it in a spiteful way. The brothers DeLeo can be pretty persuasive…I guess nothing is totally shocking, but…I don’t think it was smart for them to do that. I’m surprised they did what they did without checking the legality of it. How they just decided to go and use the [STP] name and go and hire another singer and start playing shows with a name that I still am an owner of.”

The Weenie Roast appearance back in May and new Stone Temple Pilots song, “Out of Time”(featuring Bennington on vocals), followed the band unceremoniously firing Weiland via press release back in February of this year. Weiland responded by the replacement bybringing his own lawsuit against his former STP bandmates.

Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington have an American tour lined up for the fall, kicking off on September 4 in Bethlehem, PA. They’ll release a new EP this fall.

Weiland and his band, the Walkabouts, have U.S. dates through August.
