Earlier this week, the Allman Brothers Band announced that will be postponing the remaining four dates of their annual residency in New York City, due to the band’s leader and namesake, Gregg Allman, suffering from bronchitis.

Allman was forced to sit out shows Friday and Saturday night. Originally Allman was expected to sit out the weekend shows and return to the stage to wrap up the residency with the group this week. The band had special guests Kofi Burbridge (brother of Allmans bassist Oteil Burbridge and a member of guitarist Derek Trucks’ other project the Tedeschi Trucks Band) and Rob Baracco (from Phil Lesh’s band, among others) sit in with them.

But after the weekend, it was clear that Allman still wasn’t up to performing. The band said in a statement that they were “unable to perform at the level to which they aspire,” without a healthy Gregg Allman. This wasn’t the first time a founding member of the band missed a show on this residency: drummer Butch Trucks had to sit out the March 11 performance at Beacon Theatre. Trucks, a founding member of the group, had never missed a show prior to that point. At that show, he was replaced by Duane Trucks, his nephew and brother of Derek.

All ticket holders are being encouraged to hold on to their tickets as the group plans to reschedule the dates as soon as they can.

This year marks the Allman Brothers 45th anniversary, and Allman has said that the band would retire at the end of 2014
