Listen to Pope Francis’ New Pop Track ‘Wake Up! Go! Go! Forward!’

By Amanda Wicks

Hot on the heels of Pope Francis’ historic visit to the United States comes news that he will release an 11-track album in late November, according to Rolling Stone. Popes in the past have made their sermons and special hymns available and Pope Francis is no different, except his album will include more contemporary sounds.

Alongside traditional Gregorian chants, the album will feature pop and prog-rock sounds mixed against Pope Francis’ more famous speeches and hymns. The first track released off the album “Wake Up! Go! Go! Forward!” launches with a powerful guitar riff before leading into a speech Pope Francis gave to a South Korean audience in English. “Wake up / Wake up,” Pope Francis says, “The Lord speaks of a responsibility that the Lord gives you / It is a duty to be vigilant / Not to allow the pressures, the temptations and the sins to dull our sensibility of the beauty of holiness.”

The Argentinian-born Pope speaks in English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese throughout the Vatican approved album, which focuses on messages of peace and caring for those less fortunate alongside more modern issues like the environment.

Wake Up!‘s artistic director and producer Don Giulio Neroni has worked with several popes on their albums. He said in an interview with Rolling Stone, “As in the past, for this album too, I tried to be strongly faithful to the pastoral and personality of Pope Francis: the Pope of dialogue, open doors, hospitality. For this reason, the voice of Pope Francis in Wake Up! dialogues music. And contemporary music (rock, pop, Latin etc.) dialogues with the Christian tradition of sacred hymns.”

Wake Up! drops November 27th.
